Increased Popularity of Beard Transplants

You can thank the “hipsters” who are likely responsible for bringing the bushy beard back in style a little more than ten years ago. Google Trends of the term “beard” shows a spike in search numbers in 2008, which coincided with young hipster men sporting messy, unkempt beards.

According to BeardResource.com, “Suddenly it was cool, trendy, and special to have a beard.”

And beards have yet to fall out of style again.

One indicator is the data around men without beards who want them by getting beard transplants.

A recent survey from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) found that the number of beard transplants has increased significantly within the last few years: “From 2014 to 2016, hair restoration procedures performed on the face (mustache/beard) increased 101% worldwide.”

Beard transplants give patients thicker, fuller beards when men are unhappy with their patchy facial hair.

Why are Beard Transplants So Popular Now?

Many men today want thick, full, long beards. People find them attractive for a variety of reasons: They imply strength, intelligence, and edginess. They’re trendy right now, and many men find that having facial hair gives them self confidence.

A full beard is more than a fashion statement; it can help a man feel more desirable, masculine, and successful.

How Beard Transplants Work

Similar to hair transplants on the head, beard transplants harvest hair from one part of the body (usually the back of the head) and transplant it onto the facial hair area.

Two of the most common beard transplant procedures include:

  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – the surgeon harvests complete hair follicles one-by-one from the donor area.

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) – the surgeon takes a small strip of tissue with multiple hair follicles from the donor location and then removes the hair grafts from the skin
