The Difference Between Hair Plugs and Hair Transplantation

The Difference Between Hair Plugs and Hair Transplantation

In recent years, advancements in hair restoration procedures have made achieving a full head of natural looking hair a reality. As there are now several viable options available, we want to address the common misconception in associating hair plugs with hair transplantation procedures.

Hair Plugs for Hair Loss:

Hair plugs are an outdated method used to restore hair volume. The process starts with an extraction of hairs from the donor area and transfers them to the recipient site. This removal includes 20 or more hairs and typically doesn't look natural when it's applied. Because of its size, gaps form between each group making the transplantation noticeable. It's incredibly invasive, and the recovery time is longer than other procedures.

The Difference Between Hair Plugs and Hair Transplantation:

We should start by stating that hair transplantation is a term used loosely to describe any procedure that restores hair loss. Under this umbrella are various procedures such as Follicular Unit Transplantation, Strip Harvesting, and even Plugs. Each process is executed differently, but essentially, they each take hairs from donor parts of the body and relocate them to the affected area on the scalp.

Fortunately, there are other ways, both surgically and non-surgically, to achieve natural, healthy looking hair without ever having to consider hair plugs.

Surgical Hair Transplants:

F.U.E.

Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is a technique of extracting hairs from donor areas to restore volume in balding spots. This method uses a small, round punch to move small follicular units from one space to another. This particular process is fantastic because it is precise and allows the doctor more control over the results.

Multi-Unit Graft Surgery

Graft surgery works by taking large strips of hair from donor areas and applying them to areas with less volume. This particular procedure is ideal for those who have large bald patches on the scalp where they would like to improve density.

The type of grafts we obtain with our SAFE motorized follicular unit extraction exceeds the quality of any other FUE method. If you are a good candidate for this kind of surgery, you may rest assured that at Nashville Hair Clinic you will have the best results possible.

Non-surgical Transplantation Options:

Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy is a safe form of treatment used to energize hair follicles on your scalp. The Phototherapy is cleared by the FDA and recommended by renowned hair doctors across the country. Different laser devices will achieve different results, so a consultation with your chosen doctor is necessary to help you determine your best course of action.

P.R.P. (Platelet Rich Plasma)

Platelet Rich Plasma is an excellent choice for those who don't have the option of downtime. It's become quite popular amongst famous athletes who need to return to work quickly. The process uses a mixture of your blood, which is then injected to help "heal cells." The right candidate receives two to three injections and requires a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes once every month.

Scalp Micro Pigmentation

This particular non-surgical treatment is excellent for people with limited donor hair and who need to treat scars. The technique uses a small dot of colored pigment (which matches the surrounding hair color) and is deposited on your epidermis, stimulating the appearance of hair. The effect is so realistic that it is nearly impossible to distinguish what is a hair from what is pigment. We highly recommend it for scar revision after multiple open donor hair transplants.
