5 Tricks to Stop Thinning Hair

Losing hair is a common problem many adults face. Often, this issue is due to a hereditary condition called androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness, and it affects men more frequently than women. Although there are no treatments that will reverse this condition, there are ways to prevent unnecessary hair loss. Below, we've assembled some tips to combat thinning hair. 

 

1. Use Topical Medicine Treatments

A conventional product for hair loss, especially for men, are topical treatments such as Rogaine. This product contains a drug called Minoxidil.  When applied to the scalp it stimulates blood flow. As the blood begins to move to the scalp, it carries oxygen and nutrients necessary to improve hair health. So, while it won't grow new hair, it can help make what you currently have a lot healthier and stronger. You can get some over the counter, or you can invest in prescription strength by seeing a specialist. 

 

2. Laser Hair Therapy 

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment for those who are suffering from hair loss. The procedure uses low-level lasers to stimulate growth and allow new follicles to grow on the scalp. It's also great for preserving the current strands from falling out, so you don't have to worry about additional hair loss. The soft lasers administered during the process animate the blood vessels to improve not only the health of the hair but the scalp. Many patients find that their hair feels fuller and thicker after treatment. 

 

3. Up Your Vitamin Intake 

Adding more vitamins to your diet can improve hair health. There are quite a few that can strengthen your locks. Low levels of Vitamin D are often linked to hair loss. Vitamin D helps the hair's growth phase. If you're wanting to improve thinning hair, you might want to start here. You can take an over the counter tablet or try to get at least 15 minutes of sunshine every day. There's also B12. Vitamin B12 improves the creation of red blood cells and promotes circulation. 4. Manage Stress

Stress has a negative impact on the overall health of the body. When you're feeling anxious or depressed, your cortisol levels begin to rise. The hormone sends signals to your brain that you're under duress. As a result, the body starts to segment that flow of nutrients. Instead of dispersing to the entire body, it begins to regulate them to vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Unfortunately, your body doesn't believe your hair is essential to keep you alive and therefore will reduce the number of nutrients it receives causing a temporary reduction in hair loss. 

 

5. Show Your Hair Some Extra Love 

Any unnecessary strain or pressure on your hair will cause it to break. You can manage this by showing your locks some love. Reduce the amount of heat when styling. If blowing drying is a must, try switching the setting to "warm" rather than "hot." Never brush or comb your hair when it's wet as the strands are swollen with water and susceptible to unnecessary breakage. Always use a conditioner and for those with thinner hair, focus on the ends. However, you'll still want to condition the scalp at least once or twice a week to keep it healthy.
