Male Pattern Baldness and Hair Restoration

Everyone wants to look their best, so when hair starts to thin out life gets stressful. For most, it is a hereditary process called Male Pattern Baldness that is irreversible. Fortunately, there are many options available today to help those with thinning hair, but most are superficial treatments that cease to be effective once you stop using them. Luckily, there is hair restoration which is the only permanent solution for hair loss. Read on to learn more about male pattern baldness and how hair restoration can help.

Male Pattern Baldness:

Male pattern baldness is also called Androgenic alopecia. It is an irreversible condition that is inherited at birth. Though the actual factors for the condition remain unknown, what is understood is its ability to affect both males and females equally. Because of its relationship with the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), hair loss can begin to occur as early as puberty. Usually, hair grows and then sits in a resting phase, which is a process that can take 2 to 6 years and only starts over when the hair falls out naturally.

The best candidate:

It would be natural to start thinking of ways to prevent further hair loss the moment it starts happening, but if you’re considering hair transplantation it is best approached after 5+ years of balding. You'll also want to make sure you're of age. Hair loss can take place at any age after puberty, but many doctors believe that it is important to wait until you are at least 30 before you give it serious consideration.

The Process:

It works a couple of ways. Follicular Unit Extraction moves individual hairs from one part of the body to another. This process is great for smaller, concentrated areas. Follicular Unit Transplant uses larger strips of skin and hair to cover more significant bald spots including the crown area. Speaking with one of our staff members can help you decided which option is right for you.

What to expect:

Usually, after the procedure is completed, it’s quite common for individuals to experience mild shedding. This is usually a result of the trauma your scalp has undergone and is just part of the healing process. It’s important to ensure proper healing at this stage to receive the maximum benefits. It’s also not uncommon to require a second procedure after your first one is completed. Your doctor might recommend a follow-up procedure to help eliminate any further additional bald spots, but this won't be necessary until months after your initial surgery.
